Self-Calibration of Cluster Dark Energy Studies: Observable-Mass Distribution
نویسندگان
چکیده
The exponential sensitivity of cluster number counts to the properties of the dark energy implies a comparable sensitivity to not only the mean but also the actual distribution of an observable mass proxy given the true cluster mass. For example a 25% scatter in mass can provide a ∼ 50% change in the number counts at z ∼ 2 for the upcoming SPT survey. Uncertainty in the scatter of this amount would degrade dark energy constraints to uninteresting levels. Given the shape of the actual mass function, the properties of the distribution may be internally monitored by the shape of the observable mass function. An arbitrary evolution of the scatter of a mass-independent Gaussian distribution may be self-calibrated to allow a measurement of the dark energy equation of state of σ(w) ∼ 0.1. External constraints on the mass variance of the distribution that are more accurate than ∆σ lnM < 0.01 at z ∼ 1 can further improve constraints by up to a factor of 2. More generally, cluster counts and their sample variance measured as a function of the observable provide internal consistency checks on the assumed form of the observable-mass distribution that will protect against misinterpretation of the dark energy constraints.

متن کاملSelf-Calibration of Cluster Dark Energy Studies: Counts in Cells
Cluster number counts can constrain the properties of dark energy if and only if the evolution in the relationship between observable quantities and the cluster mass can be calibrated. Next generation surveys with ∼ 10 clusters will have sufficient statistics to enable some degree of self-calibration. The excess variance of counts due to the clustering of clusters provides such an opportunity a...
متن کاملPhotometric redshift requirements for self-calibration of cluster dark energy studies
The ability to constrain dark energy from the evolution of galaxy cluster counts is limited by the imperfect knowledge of cluster redshifts. Ongoing and upcoming surveys will mostly rely on redshifts estimated from broadband photometry (photo-z’s). For a Gaussian distribution for the cluster photo-z errors and a high cluster yield cosmology defined by the WMAP 1 year results, the photo-z bias, ...

We examine the prospects for measuring the dark energy equation of state parameter w within the context of any uncertain redshift evolution of galaxy cluster structure (building on Majumdar & Mohr 2003) and show that including the redshift averaged cluster power spectrum, (P̄cl), and direct mass measurements of 100 clusters helps tremendously in reducing cosmological parameter uncertainties. Galaxy cluster surveys are power tools for studying the dark energy. In principle, the equation of state parameter w of the dark energy and its time evolution can be extracted from large solid angle, high yield surveys that deliver tens of thousands of clusters. Robust constraints require accurate knowledge of the survey selection, and crude cluster redshift estimates must be available. A simpl...
